I had an opportunity to work along teachers who had become experts in working with students. I feel teachers never master this profession only because we constantly discover new ways to provide instructional practices. It takes a special person to be a teacher. Teachers don't just shaped young minds, but we are teaching the whole person. We provide spiritual nourishment to students so they can build self-confidence. We teach them how to eat healthy and exercise so they can have healthy bodies. We guide their behavior so students develop self control. We teach them our world is our community so they will be considered of others. We demonstrate empathy to our students so they can be compassionate to others. Teachers serve as role models of honor and hard work. It is students belief that teachers are privileged, because they are the teachers. But my cooperating teachers and myself constantly remind our students that we use to be children too. We studied and practice the same skills we teach them each day. Becoming a teacher was a choice. Just like any other profession they choose to be when they grow up.
During my student teacher experience, I challenged myself to go beyond the call of duty. I stayed late. I came in early. I worked on the weekends writing lesson plans and researching strategies for effective teaching. Most days was a struggle, but seeing students engage and learning was worth the sacrifice. My lessons are my legacy. When I leave this earth, my lessons will still have relevance. Because of the planning I did to prepare lessons.
